The third part of the Die Hard Trilogy is an innovative racing game. You have to defuse a number of bombs by racing to them before they blow up. However, there is no set course to take and you are given complete freedom to navigate your way around the city streets and parks that you find yourself in. An onscreen radar tells you the approximate direction to be travelling in but it's entirely up to you to decided which route will prove to be the best.

Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza attempts to add a couple of minor innovations to the standard FPS setup, but both end up being rather pointless. As well as a health bar you have to account for stamina and morale. Your stamina falls as John runs, jumps and otherwise exerts himself, and once depleted he can't do any of that stuff anymore. Unfortunately, stamina hardly ever comes into play during shootouts, where exertion consists mostly of leaning slowly from behind a wall, and instead kicks in when you have cleared the level but are running around looking for the way out. Its main function, then, is to slow down gameplay. The morale bar drops as you take damage and find yourself in dire straits, and has no perceivable effect whatsoever. Compliments, though, on the complete absence of jumping puzzles, which are never a good idea in games that don't let you see your feet.
Uhm.....There must be something wrong here.This is the current situation:1) given up to the idea of installing the game through its CD-Rom16bit installer, and not having a Win95 VirtualPC configured at reach, I had to get the files from a rip2) merging the rip registry setup with the missing keys (the rip supposes that the game is run by its frontend DH.exe, that creates some missing entries) the result, for the installation on my pc in "C:\my games\diehard3" is in attach.3) the 3D game menu DIEHARD.exe (the one that allow you to pick one of the three possible games) can run only if run from the game install dir, two folder above its location (it is buried in the DIEHARD\GAME subfolder)4) I don't know why, but while in my pevious attempts I was able to start the three games (crashing afterwards) now the DIEHARD.exe frontend throw several exceptions before the CreateProcessA call and tries to run a NULL path program, that results in a failure. 5) by attempts, I saw that the frontend syncronizes with the son processes by means of files and a registry entry: the "inter" file seems to inter-lock the four programs, and "Abnormal Termination" registry key to tell a crash. I ignore if the "inter" file must simply be there, or it should hold some content...
Ok, though the job is not finished yet (for instance, the return from the games to the main menu is not working, and I'm pretty sure other things as well) I think it's time to share some results.To replicate the "experiment" you need the following:a) an installed "diehard trilogy" game. Since the 16bit installer doesn't work on 64bit pc, it should (I didn't test it, but I will do...) be sufficient to copy the whole "DIEHARD" folder from the CDrom to hard disk (in my case, the game is in "C:\My games\diehard3"). Don't worry about registry stuff...b) the files from the diehardtrilogy.kit.rar file here in attach, that include the registry file DieHard.wow64 to import on 64bit hosts. On 32bit pc, you may have to delete the "Wow6432Node" key prefix. The file is configured for my install folder (so, you may have to manually change the "Install directory" registry key). The archive includes also a dxwnd.diehardtrilogy.ini configuration file to be used with dxwnd or, better, the four exported files to be imported in an existing DxWnd configuration. Also here the DxWnd configuration MUST be set with the correct file path AND the correct "start folder path" (see Hook tab). The executables are located in the DIEHARD\GAME subfolder, but must be run from the game install folder!Finally, there is also a copy of the "inter" file (named "inter.sav") that should be created by DH.exe and can be useful in case DH won't work. c) the release v2.03.81 of DxWnd that I'm about to post (a preview is here...)
